Environmental Management System

NC QazaqGaz JSC, being a representative of the oil and gas industry, is aware of the high responsibility for environmental protection and climate change issues due to the specifics of its activities.

Trying to minimize the negative impact on the environment, the Company is actively improving its practices and approaches to managing environmental aspects in accordance with the Environmental Policy approved by the Board of Directors. This document sets out the main provisions regulating the Company’s environmental protection activities, including compliance with environmental legislation, conducting environmental impact assessments, ensuring trouble-free operation, increasing the energy efficiency of production, and more.

NC QazaqGaz JSC has a Policy in the field of health, labor and industrial safety, which reflects the Company’s principles of minimizing its impact on the environment. As part of its activities, the Company adheres to the basic principles of this Policy, which are based on preventing negative impacts on the environment, as well as increasing the energy efficiency of production processes aimed at reducing emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases.

In addition, in the reporting year, the Company developed a long-term Policy for the development of a management system in the field of labor protection, industrial safety and environmental protection (HSE). This document contains principles and approaches for the development of these areas.

The Group of Companies is also developing an Industrial Environmental Control Program separately for each production facility. This document contains general information about the enterprise, information about organized sources of emissions, wastewater discharges, impact on atmospheric air, soil cover, information on production and consumption waste. According to this Program, the Company is carrying out work to monitor environmental indicators and implement environmental protection measures, including:

• monitoring compliance with established emission standards at pollution sources;
• control over the impact on atmospheric air at the border of the sanitary protection zone, groundwater, soil;
• control over waste accumulation.

In accordance with the requirements of environmental legislation, all structural divisions of QazaqGaz NC JSC report to government authorities. On a quarterly basis, the Company provides information on the payment for environmental emissions to the tax register, as well as reports on the implementation of the Industrial Environmental Control Program, which are published on the website ecoportal.kz. On an annual basis, documents such as:

• report on the implementation of the Environmental Action Plan;
• report for maintaining the state register on the transfer of pollutants (GRTPZ);
• register of registration of PCB-containing equipment;
• waste inventory report;
• form 2-TP air by region, form 4-OS;
• greenhouse gas emissions inventory report.

The Company also prepares information at the request of the Departments of Ecology and other interested parties as requests are received.

Measures to ensure energy saving and energy efficiency

QazaqGaz pursues a policy of energy saving and increasing energy efficiency. The areas of activity in the field of improving energy efficiency of the QazaqGaz group of companies in the transportation, distribution, production and underground storage of gas are defined in measures for energy saving and energy efficiency.

The main energy saving measures in 2022 are:

• reactive power compensation at the field of QazaqGaz Exploration and Production LLP and at the Beineu CS of Aktau UMG;
• optimization of operating modes of electrically driven gas pumping units at the Taraz CS and Samsonovka CS;
• optimization of loading of compressor stations with gas turbine drive;
• implementation of a cleaning system for the axial compressor of gas pumping units GT-750-6 No. 3 and No. 4 TKTs-1 at the Oporny CS of UMG Aktau;
• repair of internal and external lighting systems with replacement of lamps with energy-saving LED ones at the GDS and CS facilities of subsidiaries;
• the use of energy-efficient network pumps with lower-power electric motors during the reconstruction of 6 boiler houses;
• regulation of operating modes of boiler units at night, weekends and holidays in the administrative and production premises of subsidiaries

In 2022, thanks to decarbonization measures, the QazaqGaz Group of Companies JSC reduced the volume of emissions under Scope 1 by 8% compared to the previous similar reporting period. Production subsidiaries and affiliates are developing and implementing energy saving action plans presented below.
