On March 19, at the largest CERAWeek energy conference, the First Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of JSC NC "QazaqGaz" Meirbek Ikhsanov, spoke about Kazakhstan's energy transition and decarbonization of the economy.
Now, QazaqGaz is working on attracting investments to Kazakhstan to develop the gas industry. The evolution of business models and new technological partnerships for QazaqGaz is seen in the importance of regional cooperation such as QazaqGaz & Qatar, ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia), and Savevid Energy (Sweden).
During the "The Dual Challenge: More energy and lower emissions" session, Meirbek Ikhsanov noted the key role of the gas industry in increasing the country's economic growth and reducing emissions into the atmosphere.
"Kazakhstan faces a double task: the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan has set a goal to double the GDP of the economy (gross domestic product) Kazakhstan by 2029. In addition, the country joined the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and made long-term commitments to achieve carbon neutrality. The gas industry will play a key role in achieving these goals. Kazakhstan has always been an oil country, but there are significant gas production and processing opportunities," Meirbek Ikhsanov said.
In addition, the speaker noted the increase in natural gas consumption in the domestic market and spoke about how Kazakhstan combines the role of an importer and exporter in the market.
In this session, Daniel Pratt, S&P Global, Vice President Upstream Solutions; Ganesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice President of Industrial & Energy Technology, Baker Hughes; Torgrim Reitan, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Equinor ASA, also shared their expert opinions.
