Kazakhstan is continuing its transition to a digital system for recording natural gas consumption. Alibek Zhamauov, Chairman of the Management Board of QazaqGaz National Company JSC, reviewed progress on the Aqyl Energy project in Shymkent, under which smart meters are being installed in private homes.
The new devices automatically record gas consumption and transmit the data remotely. Both the meters and their installation are provided to consumers free of charge.
The project is being implemented in stages. Nearly 80,000 private homes in Shymkent have already been fitted with smart meters, and specialists have now begun the second phase of the work. The city’s full transition to the digital system for all private homes is planned for completion by 2027.
Residents say the new system makes billing more transparent. “Previously, meter readers visited our homes to take readings, and then we received a bill. Now we do not pay a single tenge more or less than we should,” said Shymkent resident Uskenbai Segizbai.
Installation of smart meters in Shymkent began in June 2025. The project was subsequently extended to the Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions. QazaqGaz plans to roll out the system to other regions of Kazakhstan in due course.
A total of 1.35 million smart gas meters are planned for installation across the country.
During his working visit, Mr Zhamauov also reviewed facilities in Shymkent supplied with natural gas. In particular, he visited a tomato-growing greenhouse complex, which currently employs around 600 people.
The development of gas infrastructure in the region goes beyond meeting household needs, supporting businesses and helping to create new jobs.
