Altai Dzhakubaliev, Head of the HSE Service of QazaqGaz NC JSC, participated in the conference "Decarbonization in Kazakhstan's oil and gas industry: current trends and prospects." The event took place on June 21 in Aktau and served as a negotiation platform for discussing current issues of low-carbon development and energy transition and potential challenges and opportunities for the oil and gas sector. The Petrocouncil Oil and Gas Council organized the conference with the support of QazaqGaz NC JSC, Bureau Veritas, and others.
During the panel session, the head of the HSE Service spoke about the principles of sustainable development of QazaqGaz and the gas industry's role in the energy transition.
"Decarbonization is an important step towards the company's IPO, confirmation of the international ESG rating and the CDP climate rating," noted Altay Dzhakubaliev in his speech.
According to the QazaqGaz Development Strategy, until 2032, the company plans to reduce its carbon footprint by 10-12%. Experts say this is a fairly ambitious goal given the short-term growth in gas consumption.
"According to the national strategy for achieving carbon neutrality, the gas acts as a transition fuel when converting coal power plants; that is, for the same period, enterprises are planned to switch from coal to gas, which will inevitably lead to an increase in the level of carbon footprint along with the growth of gasification," - he added.
NC QazaqGaz JSC is working to join the Global Methane Pledge. In particular, at the gas facilities of Asian Gas Pipeline LLP, a pilot project was launched to inventory methane emissions by the Norwegian company Carbon Limits. The purpose of the work being carried out is to assess the current situation and analyze potential opportunities for reducing emissions.
The company's immediate plans also include developing a low-carbon development program, which will include measures to reduce its carbon footprint in accordance with the Low-Carbon Development Concept of Samruk-Kazyna JSC.
